Project Objectives

The project focuses on developing a global ‘tool kit’ for agroecological approaches and indices for sustainable soil management, with particular emphasis placed on projects and partners within the CCRPThis work will include both methodologies and instrumentation for evaluating soil quality in situ as wellas the development of a framework to better understand residue and nutrient management options and limitations across diverse smallholder contexts (including local soils classification and management knowledge). We will build upon existing efforts around the globe (both methodological and theoretical) and coordinate with regional teams to refine these tools for use throughout the CCRP.

CONTEXT BASED SOIL HEALTH SOLUTIONS

Healthy soils are important to feed the crops for high yields. All soils are not the same! Assessment of smallholder soils provides a basis for providing context based solution to improve soil health. Understanding the nutritional needs of  a particular  under specific socio-economic environments is vital for the adoption of soil fertility improvement technologies.

KNOW YOUR SOIL, LOVE YOUR SOIL, FEED YOUR SOIL!

SMALLHOLDER SOIL HEALTH

Over the years…

  • Crop yields have been drastically decreasing
  • Population expanding exponentially
  • Farming land in high demand
  • Soils, well, as one farmers in Western Kenya said , “the soils are now very tired, they can not give more”

It is with this in mind that restoring, maintaining and increasing soil health for smallholder farmers has become an urgent matter so as to increase crop yields and ultimately food security.
